Elevated levels support a diagnosis and help guide treatment decisions.

Echocardiogram: This imaging test uses sound waves to visualize the heart's structure and measure how well it is pumping. It is the primary tool for diagnosing the type and severity of heart failure. Your doctor will recommend it if symptoms or test results suggest your heart may not be functioning normally.

Living With Heart Failure

A heart failure diagnosis is serious, but it is not a reason to give up hope. With appropriate medical management — which may include medications, dietary changes such as limiting sodium and fluid intake, regular monitored physical activity, and in some cases devices or procedures — many people with heart failure live active, meaningful lives.

Self-monitoring plays an important role. Clinicians commonly ask patients with heart failure to weigh themselves each morning, monitor for swelling, and keep track of symptoms so that early signs of worsening can be caught before a hospitalization becomes necessary.
