Why Decay Happens: The Basic Mechanism

Your mouth is home to hundreds of bacterial species, and some of them feed on the sugars and refined carbohydrates in your food. As they digest those sugars, they produce acids as a byproduct. Those acids temporarily lower the pH in your mouth, and when pH drops far enough, minerals begin to leach out of your tooth enamel — the hard outer layer of your teeth. Not every cavity moves through these stages at the same speed. Several factors influence the pace of decay:

  • Oral hygiene habits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth disrupts the bacterial communities that drive decay

  • The specific bacteria present — some people carry more acid-producing bacterial strains than others
  • The location of the cavity — decay between teeth or in deep grooves can progress faster because those areas are harder to clean and monitor

Dentists and hygienists can spot decay at stages where treatment is simpler, less expensive, and less uncomfortable than it would be once symptoms appear. X-rays allow them to see decay between teeth and beneath the surface that no mirror can reveal.
